- American Eagle Platinum $100

American Eagle Platinum Proof Coins are collector versions of the official United States Mint Platinum Bullion coins. The reverse design featured on the proof version, however, is different from that found on the bullion version. The proof platinum coins are available in the one-ounce size only. The bullion platinum coins are available in one-ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce and one-tenth ounce sizes. American Eagle Platinum Proof Coins have a limited mintage and are minted at the United States Mint at West Point, thus bearing the "W" mint mark. American Eagle Platinum Proof Coins may be purchased directly from the United States Mint.

This program will examine the six (6) principles of the Preamble as follows:

1. 2009--To Form a More Perfect Union
2. 2010--To Establish Justice,
3. 2011--To Insure Domestic Tranquility,
4. 2012--To Provide for the Common Defence,
5. 2013--To Promote General Welfare, and
6. 2014--To Secure the Blessings of Liberty to Ourselves and our Posterity.

New six-year series began in 2009

In 2009, the United States Mint introduced a new six-year platinum coin program. This new series explores the core concepts of American democracy by highlighting the preamble of the U. S. Constitution. It will examine the six principles found in the preamble beginning with To Form a More Perfect Union in 2009, followed by To Establish Justice in 2010, To Insure Domestic Tranquility in 2011, To Provide for the Common Defence in 2012, To Promote the General Welfare in 2013, and To Secure the Blessings of Liberty to Ourselves and our Posterity in 2014. The themes for the reverse designs for this program are inspired by narratives prepared by the chief justice of the United States at the request of the United States Mint.

Since its debut in 1997, the United States Mint's American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin has featured Lady Liberty, a symbol of vigilance and resolute faithfulness to duty, on its obverse (heads side). Designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti, Lady Liberty again graces the obverse of this six-year series.

The 2009 reverse (tails) design is emblematic of the principle To Form a More Perfect Union. Designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Susan Gamble and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill, it features four faces representing the diversity of our Nation, with the clothing and hair weaving together to symbolize the formation of a more perfect union. It also features an American Eagle privy mark, from an original "coin punch" identified at the United States Mint at Philadelphia.

Size, content and weight

American Eagle Platinum Proof Coins contain 99.95 percent platinum. The one-ounce coin, with a $100 face value, is 1.287 inches in diameter and weighs 1.0005 troy ounces.

The themes for the reverse designs for this program are inspired by narratives prepared by the Chief Justice of the United States, John G. Roberts, Jr., at the request of the United States Mint.
